This area shows the western part of Toa Payoh town. Most of this area is dotted with HDB housing blocks of more than three decades old vintage. In recent years (1990's onwards), pockets of new HDB apartment blocks (usually 20-storey+) have been sprouting up to replace demolished flats under the HDB's Selective En-bloc Redevelopment Scheme (SERS). This has enlivened Toa Payoh and given it an injection of youthful renewal with young couples and families moving into the new flats.
The town centre of Toa Payoh, has undergone a major facelift with the erection of the HDB Hub and the re-built air-conditioned (the first in Singapore at the time) bus interchange. HDB Hub is a mixed office-cum-retail complex popular with real estate agencies and property companies.
Roads found here are the major 'Lorongs' (the Malay word for 'lane' or 'path') - Lorong 1, Lorong 1A, Lorong 2, Lorong 3 and Lorong 4 - as well Toa Payoh Central, Toa Payoh Rise and Toa Payoh West.
Schools in this area are Kheng Cheng Primary School (15 Lorong 3, Singapore 319580) and CHIJ Primary (Toa Payoh) (628 Lorong 1 Toa Payoh, Singapore 319765).
